Shrewsbury’s comedy scene is set to get even bigger as the organisers behind the town’s International Comedy Festival announce a new programme of regular touring shows.
Shire Events kicks off the series with acclaimed comedian Phil Nichol performing his show Trying My Best at Albert’s Shed on Wednesday 12 November. Tickets are now on sale priced at £15.
A Comedy Powerhouse
Phil Nichol brings an impressive CV to the Shrewsbury stage. The Sunday Telegraph has described him as ‘riotously funny’, and his talents span acting, comedy, producing, presenting, writing and music.
Known for his energetic and unique performances, Phil has built a reputation as one of the best comedians on the circuit today. His improvisational skills are unmatched, bringing a surreal edge and mischievous energy to every show. With a keen sense of fun and an eye for the shocking and absurd, he consistently delivers something fresh and unexpected.
Recognition and Achievements
Phil’s talent hasn’t gone unnoticed. He holds a record-setting six nominations for the Chortle Awards’ Best Headliner/Club Comic and has headlined at all the major comedy clubs across the country. He currently serves as a resident host of Old Rope, a new material night running in London and Brighton.
Television audiences will recognise him from numerous appearances including Holy Flying Circus on BBC Four, Richard Bacon’s Beer and Pizza Club on ITV4, One Star on BBC1 and BBC2, The Graham Norton Show on BBC1, and Never Mind the Buzzcocks on BBC2.
Each August, Phil can be found at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, where he regularly receives four and five star reviews. In 2011, he won the prestigious Scotsman Fringe First for his solo show Somewhere Beneath It All, A Small Fire Burns Still.
Growing Shrewsbury’s Comedy Scene
The launch of regular touring shows reflects the growing appetite for comedy in Shrewsbury. Beth McGowan, Director at Shire Events, explained the thinking behind the expansion.
“While Shrewsbury International Comedy Festival is a great celebration of fun and laughter, the demand for regular events is a reflection on how comedy has evolved into the mainstream alongside, for example, live music. Hence, our plan to fulfil that demand and book touring shows. Now that the capacity has increased and seating provided for audiences, Albert’s Shed has the potential to become a great comedy club venue. Phil Nichol is a fabulous comedian and a perfect start to a series of gigs from touring artists that will help to maintain Shrewsbury’s presence on the circuit.”
The Perfect Venue
With increased capacity and new seating arrangements, Albert’s Shed is well-positioned to become a regular comedy venue. The introduction of touring shows throughout the year will complement the annual International Comedy Festival, ensuring Shrewsbury remains firmly on the national comedy circuit.
Phil Nichol’s show promises an evening of boundary-pushing comedy with his trademark improvisation and infectious energy. Whether you’re a comedy regular or looking for a great night out, this launch event offers the perfect opportunity to experience one of the circuit’s finest performers.
